Where Does The Time Go?

A little more than 18 years ago, we moved to Iowa. What a journey it has been!
Where Does The Time Go?

Yuliya, Anton, and I were on our way to dinner at Fresko when the topic of conversation became how long we've been here in Iowa. Yuliya brought up that it has been a little more than 18 years since she returned to Iowa to begin working a new job at Principal Financial Group. Yes! It has been that long! And back then, we thought we'd only be here for about 4 or 5 years. ☺

It was March 2003 when we loaded up Yuliya's gold VW Passat with all her clothes, a computer, and a few other miscellaneous items. I drove up with her to get her settled in the Ramada and begin to acquaint myself with the Des Moines Metro. Back then, I-35 and I-235 were just rough little highways circling the metro. Those highways and Merle Hay Road became our most traveled routes until we discovered West Des Moines – "The Best Des Moines!" We fell in love with the wide sidewalks and the community's spacious feel.

A few days later, I flew back to Lynchburg, VA, to pack up the rest of our tiny apartment with the help of friends and family and wrap up my last few weeks working at the Ramada Inn. My dad and I drove up in a U-haul with my little blue Chevy Nova towed behind. It was quite a trip through the mountains and across the plains, but we made it. And thus began our new life in Iowa.

I think back to that whirlwind of a time now and can't believe how much life we've lived since becoming Iowans. We've made so many new friends, seen so many new places, and added some new members to our family – this last one probably took longer than our parents would've liked. I am truly blessed and thank God every day for the life He's given us; especially, that little nudge to move to Iowa and its fields of dreams!
